Acknowledgments of funding from the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, or Education must conform to the requirements of the Stevens Amendment. This amendment requires recipients of these awards to include specific disclosures in any statements, press releases, requests for proposals, bid solicitations, or other documents describing projects or programs funded in whole or in part with federal funds from these agencies.

Specifically, such materials must clearly state:

  • The percentage of the total costs of the program or project that will be financed with federal funds;
  • The dollar amount of federal funding for the project or program; and
  • The percentage and dollar amount of the total costs of the project or program that will be financed by non-governmental sources.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has provided the following sample language for use in acknowledging funding. This language may be adapted, as appropriate, for use with funding from other agencies or sources:

“Research reported in this [publication, release, etc.] was supported by [name of the Institute, Center, or other funding component] of the National Institutes of Health under award number [specific NIH grant number, in this format R01GM012345]. A total of $[amount], or [percentage] percent, of [research/project/program] is/was financed with federal funds. A total of $[amount], or [percentage] percent of [research/project/program] is/was financed with non-governmental funds (if applicable).”
